Environmental Degradation: Speaker calls for nationwide tree planting to curb adverse effects

By Kabuye Ronald

Speaker of Parliament Right Hon Anita Among has this afternoon advised all legislators to embark on initiatives meant to preserve the environment and guard against high levels of degradation.

In particular Speaker Among wants MPs to undertake tree planting campaigns in their respective constituencies as one of the measures to alleviate disasters such as floods and droughts, that have led to unforeseen loss of lives and property.

“As legislators, I want us to spare a day or two to champion tree planting and sensitization in our constituencies. Let’s lead by example; this way we shall help save our environment.” Speaker Among told MPs.

She added: “At an ample time I am going to send you all to your constituencies to plant trees because the adverse effects of climate change have become so insufferable for us to just sit and watch .This must be handled.”

Her remarks were triggered by the most recent Kasese mudslides in Western Uganda that have wreaked havoc in District.

A month ago, the heavy rains and heavy flooding also ravaged the Elgon region claiming lives and properties in districts of Kachorwa, Mbale and Bukedea.
