The opposition Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party has urged the government to accelerate the standard gauge railway (SGR) project to alleviate the worsening road traffic congestion in Uganda.

Speaking to the media at party headquarters in Kampala on Wednesday, the party spokesperson Arach Oyat Sharon emphasized that the delayed completion of the SGR project is perpetuating road traffic woes, particularly in the busy roads within Kampala and metropolitan areas. She noted that the current state of affairs is not only frustrating for commuters but also has severe economic implications, as it hinders the efficient transportation of goods and services.

Oyat Sharon appealed to the government to prioritize the SGR project, ensuring its timely completion to reduce the reliance on roads and minimize traffic congestion. She suggested that the government should consider allocating additional resources and expertise to accelerate the project’s progress.
The Uganda People’s Congress spokesperson also highlighted the environmental benefits of the SGR project, stating that it will significantly reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable transportation.

“The government must prioritize the SGR project to address the traffic menace and promote economic development,” Oyat Sharon said. “We cannot afford to continue losing productive hours and resources due to avoidable traffic congestion.”

He says according to Traffic Police, these road accidents are mostly attributed to reckless driving by both drivers and motorcycle riders of whom, many do not have driving permits.

Muzeyi noted that the report is alarming and demands immediate attention from the authorities. He questioned the effectiveness of the current traffic management systems and the measures in place to ensure road safety.
“The numbers are staggering, and it’s unacceptable that so many lives are being lost on our roads,” Muzeyi said. “As a party, we are concerned about the safety of our citizens, and we urge the government to take drastic measures to address this issue.”
Muzeyi called for increased enforcement of traffic laws, improved road infrastructure, and enhanced public awareness campaigns to promote responsible driving practices. He also suggested that the government should consider introducing more stringent penalties for traffic
