Operations at the Kiteezi landfill collapse site resumed with heightened urgency today Wednesday , with recovery teams successfully retrieving six additional bodies by this evening. This latest effort brings the total number of bodies recovered to 30 since the tragic incident on August 10, 2024.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango identified the deceased recovered today as:

  • Hairati Natumanya, aged 20
  • Lwere Ronald, the brother of Kyakanyi Rymond
  • Owori Moses, aged 3
  • Okello Richard, aged 31

All recovered bodies have been transported to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem examinations.

Onyango also shared updates from the Registration Committee, which has been documenting the extent of the disaster. Their preliminary findings reveal that 120 individuals are currently registered in a temporary shelter at Kiteezi Church of Uganda Primary School playground. The committee has also reported that 39 people are missing, including 35 local residents and four garbage collectors.

Further investigation suggests that 33 homes are suspected to have been buried under debris following the landfill collapse.

In a related development, Onyango announced the arrest of five individuals who were apprehended for impersonating victims of the disaster. These suspects were allegedly seeking compensation and relief items under false pretenses. They are currently detained at Kiteezi Police Station facing charges of impersonation.
