Isaac Kimaze Ssemakadde, Executive Director of Legal Brains Trust and a prominent advocate for human rights, has been elected as the new President of the Uganda Law Society (ULS). Ssemakadde triumphed in a tense election held at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala on Saturday, defeating his opponent Isaac Atukunda by a significant margin.

Ssemakadde secured 1,386 votes compared to Atukunda’s 632, with 12 votes deemed invalid. His victory underscores widespread support within the legal community for his vision and leadership.
In his victory speech, Ssemakadde expressed his commitment to serving with integrity and addressing moral challenges within the judiciary. “This victory belongs to all of us each member who believes in the strength of our collective voice, the power of justice, and the importance of unity in our legal fraternity,” he stated, emphasizing the collaborative spirit necessary for meaningful reform.

“I am deeply humbled and honored by the trust you have placed in me. I am committed to serving you with integrity, transparency, and unwavering dedication,” Ssemakadde added, reflecting on the responsibilities of his new role.
The election became a two-man race after Kenneth Kipaalu withdrew his candidacy earlier in the week, citing undisclosed reasons for his decision.
As the newly elected President of ULS, Isaac Ssemakadde will serve a two-year term, during which he aims to foster unity and enhance the legal profession in Uganda. An election for his successor will be held at the end of his term.
