Interpol Uganda is in the process of repatriating Kumesh Menaria, an Indian chef who was allegedly kidnapped and smuggled from Uganda to Tanzania. Menaria, who disappeared two months ago, is reported to have been abducted in Switzerland before being brought to Uganda, from where he was smuggled across the Mutukula border.

The chef was subsequently arrested and detained at Shaka Police Station in Tanzania, located about 20 kilometers from the Ugandan border. SCP Joseph Obwona, Acting Director of Interpol and International Relations, confirmed that Menaria has been secured from Tanzanian authorities and has provided a statement detailing his ordeal.
Three suspects linked to the kidnapping have been remanded in custody, including Basundhara Oswal, the daughter of Pankaj Oswal—an employee of Menaria—and their lawyer, Rita Ngabire. They face charges of kidnapping with intent to kill.

Obwona noted that Interpol is coordinating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Uganda to facilitate Menaria’s return to his home country. He mentioned that the victim will have the opportunity to choose his country of repatriation, as advised by foreign affairs officials.
While three suspects have been apprehended, the owner of the Oswal company remains at large, currently out of the country. Meanwhile, Obwona reported that Menaria’s health has significantly improved, having previously suffered from poor nutrition and living conditions during his confinement.
