In a dramatic turn of events, an attempted robbery in Fort Portal City turned fatal when angry residents lynched one of the suspects involved in the theft of fifty million shillings (Shs 50,000,000) from businesswoman Kezaabu Irene. The robbery occurred at her workplace, Buguma & K.I Motor Cycles Spares Enterprise, located in Kisenyi Village, Bazaar Ward, Central Division.
A group of eight armed assailants, including one with a rifle, stormed the premises, threatening to kill Kezaabu and her employees unless they handed over the money. Fearing for their lives, the workers complied, and the thieves made off with the cash.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed the incident in a statement at Naguru Police Headquarters. He said the police were promptly alerted and responded to the scene, but when they arrived, they found that the residents had already captured one of the suspects, identified as Kanyankole, and lynched him.
“The community was angered by the brazen robbery and took matters into their own hands,” Kituuma explained.
Through intelligence gathering, authorities were able to track down a second suspect, Businge Abdallah, who had fled the city on a Link bus to Kampala. Police intercepted the bus at Mubende and arrested Businge, recovering some of the stolen money in the process.
“The main suspect, Businge, was apprehended at our checkpoint. Some of the stolen money was found in his possession,” Kituuma added.
The body of the lynched suspect, Kanyankole, has been transferred to the Fort Portal Mortuary for a post-mortem, while the police continue their search for the remaining members of the robbery gang. Authorities have vowed to track down all those involved in the crime.
