Capacity Building is Key for Nurses And Midwives

By Kenneth Arereng
The Land for the University is situated at Kayanja Mukono District. It gives the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Union a big boost for its members who are eager to specialize.

In an end of year address delivered on Saturday at Mulago Guest House, Annet Birungi, the General Secretary; Uganda Nurses And Midwives Union, revealed that plans are underway for the establishment of a university to deal with specialized courses.

The university to be located in Mukono serves as a yardstick for the nurses to further upgrade and broadens their skills. It’s good to note that online sessions are being held for the students.

L-R: Annet Birungi, the general secretary Uganda Nurses And Midwives Union, Justus Cherop, the president and Dr. Elizabeth Kasirye , the national treasurer addressing the media.

“We have fully purchased 10 acres of land at Kayanja Mukono near Namagunga Girl’s School. On this land we shall construct the much needed Nurses and Midwives specialized University”, Birungi noted.

It comes at a time when the curriculum is ready and what waits is for the commencement of the school program. Online classes are being conducted and 50 nurses/midwives graduated this year, thanks to a partnership with California funders. A further 50 scholarship is still up for grabs in the next intake.

The union hopes to train 50 Nurses/Midwives in critical Care and the next cohort shall begin early February 2025.

The University shall help the nurses and midwives to acquire specialized skills in areas that have been creating a gap in health care delivery. Birungi emphasized the need for nurses to get acquaintances in areas of the heart, kidney, eyes and skin respectively.

With Land already secured for the specialized university, the union is sourcing for funds before construction takes off, for the institute which will act as, a centre of excellence for the workers.
