Kampala’s NAM Summit Success: Seven Hills’ Unseen Contribution Beyond Government Efforts

By Our Reporter

The success of Kampala’s preparations for the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in February 2024 cannot be attributed solely to formal government efforts. A pivotal force behind this achievement was the involvement of Seven Hills, a unique organization composed of former street children, child vendors, and ex-gang members.

Under the disciplined leadership of Salim Menton, Seven Hills became an integral part of the framework established by Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to ensure a successful hosting of the NAM summit. This community-driven initiative brought a fresh and organized approach to transforming the cityscape, leading to the monumental success that was Kampala’s hosting of the summit.

One of the primary contributions of Seven Hills was their initiative to improve the city’s aesthetic appeal and urban ambiance. By engaging property owners directly, the group facilitated painting and paving projects that transformed the city’s appearance. Through door-to-door outreach and sensitization campaigns, they encouraged property owners to invest in maintaining their buildings, enhancing the overall look of Kampala.

According to KCCA sources, Seven Hills was formed by a select group of KCCA leaders with the goal of leading a citywide cleanup effort. Their impact extended beyond the physical appearance of the city – they also contributed to raising awareness about the importance of cleanliness and orderliness during the summit. Through mobile air awareness campaigns, loudspeakers, and community meetings, Seven Hills educated the public on the importance of maintaining a clean, welcoming environment for the international delegates.

A particularly notable achievement was the group’s extensive tree-planting initiative, where thousands of palm trees were planted across various streets of Kampala. This project not only beautified the city but also made it more welcoming to visitors.

In addition to beautification, Seven Hills played a crucial role in improving waste management practices, particularly along major roads and public areas. Their efforts to tackle waste management ensured that Kampala would not leave a negative impression on visiting dignitaries and delegates during the summit.

Overall, Seven Hills’ involvement in the preparation for the NAM summit was a testament to the power of community-driven action. Their tireless efforts transformed Kampala into a city that was not only prepared to host a major international event but also made lasting improvements for the residents of the city.
