The Police annual crime report 2024 released today by the police has indicated that a total of 81,850 cases were taken to court by the end of 2024 out of the 218,716 cases which were reported to police country wide.

The annual crime report which covers a period from 1st January to 31st December 2024, indicates that out of 119,939 cases which were submitted to the office of the DPP for Perusal, 81,750 cases were taken to court of which 26,328 cases secured convictions, 1,510 cases were Acquittals, 10,333 cases were dismissed while 43,579 cases were pending in courts of law.
The report also indicates that the Month of November registered the highest number of cases taken to court with 7,475 cases followed by June with 7,195 cases July with 7,250 while December registered the lowest cases with 5623 cases
The released report also indicates that on average 18,226 cases were reported to police per month and the Month of February registered the highest number of cases reported to police country wide with 19,227 cases followed by April with 19,045 cases and September with 18,946.
Launching this report at Police Headquarters Naguru, the Inspector General of Police Abbas Byakagaba thanked the public for logging in their complaints to the police which enabled them to access the progress of fulfilling their mandate of keeping law and order.
In so doing they have already started implementation of sub county policing model, where they will be having 18 police officers at each sub county.
He said this is aimed at decentralizing the police services closer to the people, enhancing crime prevention in the communities and enabling quick response to crimes.
He urged members of the public to continue reporting cases and complaints which give a clear picture about what’s happening in societies and communities.

On his side the director of CID AIGP Tom Magambo said that they are to continue with the fight against economic crimes, warning that all those intending to steal government funds will be arrested and dealt with.
He said that this is a sure deal those involved in corruption that they will be arrested however big they are.
More to the report the director of traffic and road safety AIGP Lawrence Nuwabine said that a total of 5,144 people were killed in accidents in 2024 which is an increase of 7% compared to the previous year where 4086.
Nuwabine further said that most of the accidents happen from 6pm towards midnight, revealing that among the days Sunday is the day where people die in accidents yet it’s day where vehicles are few compared to other days of the week.
At the same launch the director of fire, prevention and rescue services AIGP Steven Tanui said that out of 1280 cases reported they successfully handled 1150 decrying 10 cases which were false.
He emphasized the need for school owners working with the ministry of education and police to have ways of fighting school fires after recording an increase with 5 more cases in 2024 compared to 50 cases in 2023.
