IGP Byakagaba Tips RPCs and DPCs Ahead of 2026 General Elections

By Robert Segawa

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, has urged regional and division/district police commanders to step up preparations ahead of Uganda’s 2026 general elections.

Regional Police Commanders (RPCs) and Division Police Commanders (DPCs) are currently attending a two-day retreat at the Police Headquarters in Naguru, Kampala.

Presiding over the opening session on Thursday, IGP Byakagaba described the retreat as timely and significant. “I call upon officers to share experiences and strategies to make our country more secure, especially now that the 2026 general election activities are underway,” he said.

He reminded the officers that security is a critical pillar of society, deeply tied to culture and religion.

“As territorial commanders, your roles are pivotal. You must remain focused on ensuring peaceful elections in 2026 and maintaining security to support the socio-economic transformation of our people,” Byakagaba emphasized. He also encouraged the implementation and sustainability of the sub-county policing model, calling on commanders to show leadership in mobilizing both resources and public support.

Speaking at the same event, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Justice Simon Byabakama, underscored the importance of a peaceful electoral environment before, during, and after the polls. He stressed the need for close collaboration between the Electoral Commission and security forces to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process and maintain public order.
