Apex Digital Skills Initiative Launches Amid Questions Over Funding and Sustainability

By Peter Luzinda

A new non-profit program, Apex Digital Skills (ADS), has officially launched in Uganda, aiming to equip young people with practical training in digital media, technology, and creative content production. The initiative offers free courses in video editing, radio production, graphic design, coding, digital marketing, and introductory artificial intelligence.

The launch event took place at the Apex Media Services Hub in Kampala. According to organizers, the program targets more than 5,000 youth in its first year, with training sessions planned across several districts, including Kampala, Wakiso, Mbarara, and Gulu.

The initiative was founded and is being personally financed by Ugandan media entrepreneur Nyanzi Martin Luther, who has diverted significant resources from his commercial enterprises to support the project. Initial estimates place startup costs at over UGX 250 million, covering infrastructure, equipment, and training materials.

While the initiative has been widely praised for its ambition and potential impact, questions remain about its long-term sustainability and funding model. Organizers say they are exploring partnerships and grant opportunities to maintain and expand the program in the coming years.
