Opposition MPs endorse Okot Bitek as their flag bearer for Deputy Speakership race

Opposition legislators in Parliament have endorsed Kyoga North MP Okot Moses Bitek Junior as their candidate for the position of Deputy Speaker of parliament.

Okot who made it to parliament on the Forum for Democratic Change FDC ticket will contest against the National Resistance Movement NRM candidate and government Chief Whip Thomas Tayebwe.

Tayebwa the Ruhinda North MP was unanimously endorsed by the NRM Central Executive Committee to contest on the position of Deputy Speaker of Parliament on the party’s flag.

Parliament will on Friday sit at Kololo Independence grounds to vote the next speaker of the 11th parliament following the death of Jacob Oulanyah who succumbed to terminal illness on Sunday in Seattle in the USA.

Article 82(4) of the Constitution of Uganda stipulates that  no business shall be transacted in Parliament other than election to the office of Speaker at any time that office is vacant.
