By Robert Segawa

Eleven people have been confirmed dead following a fatal road accident involving a bus belonging to Kasaba Bus Company and a Tata box body lorry.

The deadly crash occurred shortly after midnight at Karengero Village corner along the Masaka–Mbarara Highway in Lwengo District. Thirteen other victims were rushed to hospital in critical condition.

According to SP Micheal Kananura, the spokesperson for Traffic and Road Safety, the accident involved a Kasaba Coach, registration number UAL 492H, and a Tata box body lorry, registration number UBH 013Q.

Kananura said that among the deceased is a police officer, identified as PC Abaho, who was attached to Mukono Police Division under the Kampala Metropolitan Police area.

He added that eight people died at the scene, while three others later succumbed to their injuries at Lyantonde Hospital.

The injured are currently receiving treatment at Lyantonde Main Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased have been taken to the mortuary for postmortem examination.

SP Kananura further noted that police are working to remove the wreckage from the scene and tow the vehicles to a nearby police station.

In a related development, Kananura revealed that police are also investigating another accident involving a single Sinotruck in Rukole Swamp along the Buwama–Bunjako Beach road in Mpigi District, which claimed an unspecified number of passengers.

The truck reportedly plunged into the swamp and overturned. Police efforts are underway to retrieve the vehicle and establish the exact number of fatalities in that incident.
