The Electoral Commission of Uganda has released the roadmap for the Kikube District Chairperson by-election, scheduled for June 10, 2026, following the death of Peter Banura.

Banura, who was the incumbent District Chairperson and had also been declared Chairperson-elect (LCV CP) in the most recent elections, died on Saturday, April 4, 2026, after being involved in a fatal road crash.
According to the Commission’s Head of Public Relations, Julius Mucunguzi, the by-election is being organized in line with the Local Government Act, which requires that such vacancies be filled within six months of official notification.

“We are committed to conducting a free, fair, and transparent electoral process in Kikube District, in line with the law and established electoral guidelines,” Mucunguzi said.
The electoral roadmap begins with a stakeholders’ meeting on April 27, 2026, followed by the update of the National Voters Register from April 28 to April 30, 2026. The voters register will be displayed for public scrutiny from May 8 to May 12, 2026.
Mucunguzi urged eligible voters to actively participate in the update and verification exercise to ensure the credibility of the electoral process.
Candidate nominations will take place on May 25 and 26, 2026, while campaigns are scheduled from May 28 to June 8, 2026, ahead of the polling day on June 10, 2026.
The Commission has called on all stakeholders to maintain peace and adhere to electoral guidelines throughout the process.
