IGANGA – Iganga Municipality has announced tough enforcement measures against residents and business owners who fail to comply with sanitation regulations as Uganda officially launches the National Cleaning Days initiative.
Speaking ahead of the exercise, Iganga Municipality Mayor Nasser Kongola warned that beginning Wednesday next week, municipal authorities will launch an operation targeting shops and businesses that have failed to pay garbage collection fees or do not have dustbins.
The mayor said all non-compliant shops will be locked until they meet the required sanitation standards.
“We are giving everyone a final warning. Those who are not ready to comply with the municipality’s sanitation regulations should vacate the town before the operation begins,” Kongola said.
He emphasized that participation in the National Cleaning Days will be mandatory for all residents and businesses, adding that maintaining a clean environment is a collective responsibility.
Kongola also warned that indiscriminate littering will no longer be tolerated, noting that anyone identified dumping rubbish illegally will face legal action in accordance with the law.
The enforcement follows the Government of Uganda’s declaration of the last Saturday of every month as National Cleaning Day, an initiative aimed at promoting environmental cleanliness, improving public health, and encouraging communities across the country to take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.
Municipal authorities have urged residents, traders, and property owners to cooperate by paying garbage collection fees, providing dustbins at their premises, and actively participating in the monthly cleaning exercises to ensure Iganga remains clean and healthy.
