IGANGA – Police fired teargas on Tuesday to disperse a group of aggrieved candidates and their supporters who attempted to force their way into the Electoral Commission offices in Iganga following disagreements over the ongoing LC1 elections.
The protesters, who were dissatisfied with the electoral process, gathered outside the Electoral Commission offices before attempting to gain entry, prompting police to intervene.
According to Busoga East Police spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha, officers were compelled to use reasonable force, including teargas, to prevent the protesters from breaking the premises and to restore public order.
“We had to use some force to disperse the protesters after they attempted to forcefully enter the Electoral Commission offices. Our priority is to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of the public,” Kasadha said.
Security remains heavily deployed around the Electoral Commission offices, with police continuing to monitor the situation to prevent any further disturbances.
No injuries or arrests had been officially confirmed by the time of filing this report
