UBOS dispatches the first consignment of census materials

By Olivia Nabaggala

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics ( UBOS) has dispatched the first consignment of census materials to six districts ahead of the census scheduled for 10 days starting 9th -19th of May.

The six districts include Gulu district, Gulu city, Alebtong ,Amurata and Otuke.

The consignment has been flagged off by the minister of state for planning Amos Lugolobi at UBOS ware house in Ntinda and these include bags, T shirts, Manuals etc.

While dispatching off the consignment minister Lugolobi assured the public that during the census time their information that will be submitted to enumerators will be confidential and it won’t be spread to anyone.

He also encouraged leaders at various levels to offer the necessary support since their information will help communities in terms of services in their areas and proper planning to the country.

Minister Lugolobi also revealed that training of census staff has been concluded at national level, region and district and the training of enumerators will commence on Monday 29th April 2024.

However the executive director of UBOS Chris Mukiza showed concern over recruitment malpractices exhibited in the recruitment of enumerators and this has led to deployment of unqualified personnel hence calling for deployment of security forces to help in the exercise.

He also emphasised that all those that have been caught involving themselves in the malpractices have been removed from the recruitment list.

The dispatch comes at a time when UBOS recently disclosed that the same tablets will be used for voter registration for the 2026 general election, National Identification Registration Authority will also use the tablets  for national identity card registration among others.
