Former Butambala County Member of Parliament and National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy President for Buganda, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, has been granted cash bail of Shs10 million by the International Crimes Division of the High Court in Kampala.
Kivumbi appeared before the court on Thursday alongside 22 co-accused who are facing terrorism charges stemming from alleged acts of electoral violence in Butambala earlier this year.
The court also released 16 of the co-accused on cash bail of Shs1 million each. However, six others were denied bail after the court found that they had not met the required conditions.
Kivumbi was arrested on January 22, 2026, over violence that allegedly erupted in Butambala on the night of January 16 during the post-election period. The incidents reportedly left several people dead at his home.
He was later charged with terrorism together with 25 other suspects before the Butambala Magistrate’s Court and has remained on remand for nearly six months.
According to the prosecution, Kivumbi and his co-accused allegedly coordinated attacks on Kibibi Police Station, the Butambala Electoral Commission tally centre, and other locations between January 11 and January 17, 2026.
The prosecution further alleges that the attacks were intended to influence government actions or intimidate the public, resulting in the deaths of seven people. The case is expected to continue before the International Crimes Division.
