Residents Protest KCCA’s Decision to Use Nkumba Bwaise as Temporary Garbage Dump After Kiteezi Tragedy

By Namuli N Racheal

In the wake of the Kiteezi landfill disaster, which claimed the lives of over 21 people, the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has reached an agreement with Entebbe Municipality to temporarily use Nkumba Bwaise as a dumping site for garbage. This decision, however, has sparked significant anger among local residents.

Nkumba Bwaise, while located in Katabi, is managed by the authorities of Entebbe Municipality. The arrangement was made to address the urgent need for waste disposal following the collapse of the Kiteezi landfill. However, residents of the area are voicing serious concerns about the impact of the large garbage trucks on local roads and the potential health risks associated with increased waste accumulation.

Residents argue that the presence of the trucks and the accumulation of waste could exacerbate environmental and health issues, including the risk of cancer and other diseases. They have expressed frustration with the local leadership, particularly Chairman LC3 Ronald Kalema, accusing him of neglecting their concerns and failing to address the potential dangers of the new dumping site.

In response to the KCCA’s decision, residents have threatened to organize demonstrations to protest against the use of Nkumba Bwaise for garbage disposal. They are calling for immediate action to address their health and environmental concerns and seeking alternatives to the current arrangement.

The situation has put pressure on local authorities to address the community’s grievances and find a solution that balances waste management needs with the health and safety of residents. As the protest plans gain momentum, both KCCA and Entebbe Municipality face mounting scrutiny over their handling of waste management and the implications for local communities.
