President M7Addresses Concerns over Dr. Besigye’s Arrest, Advocates for Accountability and Swift Trial

By Kabuye Ronald
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has responded to the growing concerns among Ugandans regarding the detention of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, who is facing serious allegations of planning offenses that threaten national security. In a statement, Museveni emphasized the need for a quick trial to ensure that the facts of the case are brought to light.

He questioned why some are asking why Dr. Besigye was arrested, arguing that the focus should be on ensuring justice is done swiftly. “The correct question should be: Why was Dr. Besigye arrested? The answer is clear a quick trial so that facts can come out,” Museveni said. “Otherwise, we risk promoting insecurity, which is dangerous for the country.”

The President further explained that Uganda’s foundation is built on reconciliation, but stressed that accountability must be upheld, particularly for those who have committed acts of violence. He reflected on the sacrifices made by freedom fighters in the past, including the defeat of Idi Amin, as pivotal to Uganda’s current peaceful state.

He acknowledged concerns raised about the delays in Dr. Besigye’s trial, noting that the courts had ordered the transfer of his case from the Military Court to Civilian Courts due to gaps identified in the military tribunal system. Museveni called on all parties to work toward expediting the case and closing the gaps in the military justice system, asserting that if Dr. Besigye is innocent, he should demand a speedy trial to prove his innocence.

On the issue of Dr. Besigye’s health, the President addressed the claims that the opposition leader was in poor condition. Museveni clarified that there is a government hospital within the prison system and that Dr. Besigye’s personal doctors have been attending to him, including taking him to private clinics. He also pointed out that the alleged hunger strike, which Dr. Besigye reportedly initiated, was a form of unprincipled blackmail to gain sympathy and possibly seek bail. Museveni emphasized that instead of focusing on a hunger strike, Dr. Besigye should demand a quick trial to clear his name.

“Let us wait for the civilian court,” Museveni concluded, reiterating that justice must be served without delay.
