Yasin Omari Declared Unopposed as Chairperson Makindye East A

By Olivia Nabaggala

The Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission, Dr. Tanga Odoi, has declared Yasin Omari unopposed for the position of Chairperson Mainstream Makindye East A.

This development follows a dramatic turn of events during the subcounty-level NRM structural elections held on Friday, May 16, 2025, at St. Stephen Church of Uganda Primary School. Omari’s sole competitor, Abdul Nash Wahab, initially accepted to participate in the election but later boycotted the counting process, citing that Omari was holding two positions Chairperson Mainstream and Secretary for Publicity on the Elders League for Makindye East Subcounty.

Dr. Odoi clarified that Omari had officially withdrawn from the Elders League in a letter dated May 12, 2025, effectively resolving the issue of dual roles. Based on this withdrawal and Wahab’s decision to boycott the election during the counting process, Omari was declared unopposed.

Speaking shortly after receiving the declaration, Omari thanked Dr. Odoi for upholding electoral justice and called for disciplinary action against former Kampala Resident City Commissioner Amina Lukanga, accusing her of interfering with the election.

“Amina Lukanga is not a voter at the subcounty level as she stopped at the village level in Kibuli, yet she was present at the venue acting as an RCC even though she had resigned. Some individuals were even smuggled into the voting venue and hidden in toilets, ready to cast illegal votes,” Omari alleged. “Despite the situation being hostile and seemingly in favor of my opponent, I accepted to proceed with the election because I had the numbers and didn’t want a postponement.”

Omari is now calling on the NRM Electoral Commission to also declare four other candidates Vice Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary General, and Publicity Secretary unopposed, as they were aligned with his camp and had no challengers.

While elections for other special interest groups including Youth, Veterans, Elders, and Persons with Disabilities proceeded smoothly, the mainstream committee vote was disrupted by Wahab’s boycott.

Looking ahead, Omari is now preparing to contest for Chairperson Mainstream at the district level, with that election scheduled for Friday, May 23, 2025.
