Police Probe Drowning of Seeta High Student, Lifeguard Arrested

By Robert Segawa

The Territorial Police in Mukono are investigating a suspected case of drowning involving a Senior Six student at Seeta High School, Mbalala Campus, in Mukono District.

The deceased has been identified as 21-year-old Nsamba Kevin, a student who resided within the school quarters.

The tragic incident occurred on the evening of Sunday, August 3, 2025. According to preliminary reports, Kevin had participated in a football match with fellow students before heading to the school’s swimming pool. At the time, trainees were using the pool under the supervision of a lifeguard. Kevin reportedly jumped into the deep end and was not seen again.

Later that evening, after a school movie session, his absence was noticed by fellow students. Despite a search effort that lasted through the night, Kevin could not be found.

Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire stated that the disappearance was first reported to the dormitory captain, then to the chief warden, and finally brought to the attention of the school principal. The matter was officially reported to police around midday on Monday.

A case of suspected drowning was initially registered at Mbalala Police Station and later transferred to Mukono Police Station. A joint team—including the Regional CID officer, detectives, scene-of-crime officers (SOCOs), fire and rescue personnel, and ICT forensic experts—visited the scene to begin investigations.

“We recorded statements from relevant witnesses, and the body was retrieved and taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination,” Owoyesigyire said.

He added that the school’s swimming pool trainer has been arrested to assist with the ongoing investigation.

Preliminary CCTV footage confirms the presence of the pool attendant at the time of the incident. Further analysis of the footage is underway as police await the postmortem results and other critical evidence.
