Police Crack Down on Boda Boda Theft Rackets Following Nationwide Public Outcry

By Robert Segawa
Police in Katwe Division have launched a major crackdown on motorcycle (boda boda) theft rackets, following a nationwide public outcry over increasing cases of violent robberies and motorcycle thefts.

The crackdown was the result of an intelligence-led operation conducted in Wansanso Zone, Kibuye II Parish, Makindye Division, Kampala District—an area identified as a hotspot for stolen motorcycles. According to police, many of the stolen motorcycles and robbery cases were traced back to this location.

Findings indicate that the most affected areas include Busabala, Kigo, Masajja, Ndejje, Nakawuka, and Kajjansi in Wakiso District, as well as parts of Luwero, Nakaseke, Masaka, Gomba, and other regions across the country.

During the four-hour operation, security personnel fired live bullets as part of efforts to suppress resistance and ensure arrests. Over 30 suspects were apprehended, and several exhibits recovered, including nine Bajaj Boxer motorcycles.

Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the operation and disclosed some of the recovered motorcycle registration numbers: UFL 083U, UFW 693H, UET 495A, UFU 306W, UDS 592K, UFA 841M, UEL 401N, UFC 050L, and one motorcycle without a number plate.

Owoyesigyire added that numerous motorcycle parts were also seized from various spare parts shops in Wansanso.

“All the suspects arrested will be prosecuted in courts of law once screening and investigations are completed,” he said.

He further emphasized the police’s commitment to working with local leaders and vigilante groups to curb the vice and restore safety for motorcycle operators both in the city and throughout the country.
