Over 1,000 NUP Candidates for Local Government Vetted in Busoga Subregion

By Obbo Yusuf

The vetting exercise for National Unity Platform (NUP) flagbearers in the Busoga Subregion East has concluded successfully, with over 1,000 candidates for various local government positions vetted across the electoral areas.

According to Bwagu Salimu, the NUP focal person for the Busoga Subregion, the process was calm, peaceful, and well-organized, reflecting the party’s commitment to transparency and credible internal democracy.

“The process is transparent and trusted by every participant. We believe it will help us select credible and powerful candidates capable of securing victory in the general elections,” Bwagu said.

He further noted that the party ensured all participants were well catered for, with food and refreshments provided, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose among aspirants.

Kitimbo Sumark, an aspiring candidate for Iganga Municipality Mayor, emphasized that Uganda’s liberation struggle begins at the grassroots level and called for national participation.

“This is a national concern where every citizen must be involved. The party has many capable candidates, but I believe I am the right choice for the people. I’m ready to represent NUP as Iganga’s Lord Mayor,” Sumark said.

The vetting process for local government candidates was conducted in Bugiri yesterday, drawing several NUP officials from the region. Through Bwagu Salimu, the party expressed appreciation to all well-wishers and supporters of NUP activities in the area.

According to the NUP Secretariat, this vetting accounts for 40% of the criteria for awarding the party flag. The remaining 60% will be based on an upcoming assessment of the candidates’ ground mobilization strength.

Bwagu described the exercise as more than just a procedural formality, calling it a declaration of the party’s readiness:

“The strength, discipline, and unity demonstrated here affirm that NUP is not just participating in the upcoming elections, we are positioning ourselves to overwhelmingly win in Busoga Subregion East.”

“Our candidates, selected through a fair, rigorous, and people-centered process, represent the hope and change Ugandans are yearning for. With the people’s will and God’s guidance, we shall deliver a new dawn for Busoga and for Uganda.”
