Uganda Reaffirms Commitment to Protecting Rights of Persons with Albinism

By Jumah Kakomo
The Ugandan government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting and protecting the human rights of persons with albinism, who are recognized as a category of persons with disabilities.

This assurance was delivered by Patrick Menya, a Senior Gerontologist representing the Commissioner for Disability at the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, during the official opening of the review of the National Action Plan for Persons with Albinism 2020–2025 in Kampala.

Menya noted that the National Action Plan 2020–2025 was developed to advance the rights of persons with albinism, based on the principles of equality, non-discrimination, inclusion, and active participation.

Meanwhile, Olive Namutebi, Executive Director of the Albinism Umbrella, commended the government for its efforts to support persons with disabilities. She, however, emphasized the need to strengthen collaboration among civil society organizations, government agencies, ministries, and departments to further improve the wellbeing of persons with albinism.
