The Patriotism Secretariat has directed all secondary schools and higher institutions across Uganda to ensure that newly admitted students undergo patriotism training, saying the programme is compulsory under a presidential directive aimed at promoting love for the country, discipline, and responsible citizenship among learners.
The directive was delivered by the Patriotism Secretariat’s Communication and Public Relations Officer, Pamela Watuwa, while officiating at the pass-out ceremony of 270 students who successfully completed a two-week patriotism training course at Leaura School of Nursing and Midwifery in Bugweri District.
Watuwa represented the Patriotism Secretariat Coordinator, Hellen Sekku, at the ceremony. Before the official pass-out, she inspected the trainees’ parade, after which the students showcased marching drills, military-style skills, and acrobatic performances that entertained guests and local leaders who attended the event.
The institute’s Patriotism Patron, Tadeo Nantamu, said the trainees had acquired valuable knowledge in leadership, discipline, patriotism, teamwork, and other life skills that can prepare them for opportunities in various security agencies and public service.
The Director of Leaura School of Nursing and Midwifery, Sauleima Lule, said the training helps shape disciplined and compassionate health workers who are committed to serving patients professionally. She commended President Yoweri Museveni for introducing the patriotism programme.
Bugweri Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Bamuli Magala urged the graduates to put the lessons they had learned into practice, saying discipline and patriotism would distinguish them from their peers.
Bugweri County Member of Parliament Sadala Wandera encouraged the students to remain patriotic and committed to national development. He also pledged to continue supporting vulnerable students in accessing education.
While passing out the trainees, Watuwa reiterated that all secondary schools and higher institutions should organize patriotism training for newly admitted students in line with the presidential directive. She said the programme is intended to nurture disciplined, responsible, and patriotic citizens.
She also advised students to avoid negative peer groups that could lead them into criminal activities and other forms of misconduct.
The ceremony concluded with Watuwa awarding certificates and medals to the graduates in recognition of successfully completing the two-week patriotism training programme.
