By Kabuye Ronald

Unknown assailants attacked three Uganda Prisons Service officers and stole two firearms during an attempted break-in at Kyegegwa Government Prison at around 1:00 a.m. today.

The officers were deployed as sentries for the night shift when they came under attack. The three injured officers are Sergeant Warder Kalisa Titus, Sergeant Wardress Nakuya Suzan Margaret and Warder Odongo Joshua.

According to the Uganda Prisons Service, the attackers made away with two guns, registered as UG PRI 563615124 and UG Pol. 565828358, each loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.

The injured officers were rushed to Kyegegwa General Hospital for treatment. No prisoner escaped during the incident.

Sister security agencies were immediately called in, while investigations into the attack are underway. Security teams are also conducting an operation to apprehend the assailants and recover the stolen firearms.

The Uganda Prisons Service has appealed to members of the public with information that could assist in the arrest of the suspects or recovery of the guns to call the toll-free number 0800144144 or report to the nearest police station.

The statement was issued by Frank Baine Mayanja, Senior Commissioner of Prisons, Cooperation and Corporate Affairs and Service Spokesperson.
