A 21-year-old man has been sentenced to five years in prison for repeatedly assaulting his parents in Lukose Cell, Kajjansi Town Council, Wakiso District.
Barugahare Lawrence appeared before Kajjansi Grade One Magistrate Happy Monica, where he was charged with grievous harm over allegations that he repeatedly assaulted his parents.
According to his mother, Namanya Dina, Barugahare had for a long time been kicking and beating both her and his father before demanding food from them.
Namanya said her son started using marijuana while in Primary Three, after which he frequently dodged lessons and gradually became unruly.
She added that residents had complained about Barugahare’s behaviour on numerous occasions, saying that his conduct had become so serious that residents at one point wanted to lynch him.
When he appeared before court, Barugahare pleaded guilty to the charge. The court also noted that he showed no remorse for his actions.
Magistrate Happy Monica subsequently sentenced him to five years in prison.
His parents welcomed the sentence, saying they would finally have peace and an opportunity to rest without the constant fear of being assaulted.
They also expressed hope that the sentence would serve as a lesson to their son and help address his behaviour.
