Uganda Needs an Audit of Master’s Degree Programmes. What Exactly Are We Mastering?

By Ivan Kimuli Kigozi

Uganda faces complex challenges: youth unemployment, low agricultural productivity, poor public service delivery, industrial underdevelopment, and persistent poverty.

Our universities are producing graduates, and thousands are pursuing master’s degrees. But where is the specialised knowledge needed to tackle these challenges? Where are the innovations, practical solutions, research findings and new industries emerging from all this advanced education?

A master’s degree should equip someone to understand a problem more deeply and contribute to solving it.

If we invest years studying, spend millions on tuition, and emerge with qualifications that have little relevance to the challenges facing our communities, then we must question whether that investment is paying off.

Are we pursuing master’s degrees to master knowledge and solve problems, or simply to add titles to our names?

I propose a national audit of postgraduate programmes in Uganda. Let us examine their relevance, research output, graduate outcomes and contribution to national development.

This is not an attack on people pursuing higher education. It is a demand that higher education deliver meaningful value.

Uganda cannot afford an education system that measures success only by the number of certificates awarded while the problems those qualifications should help address remain unresolved.

A degree should be more than a title. It should be an investment in the ability to make a difference.

Let the debate begin.
