Ex Kenyan minister Amb. Chawahir installed as new chancellor for IUEA, launches scholarship fund

Former Kenyan minister and diplomat Ambassador Dr. Amina  Chawahir Mohamed has been installed as the new chancellor for International University of East Africa(IUEA).

She replaces late professor Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebire who was the founding chancellor of IUEA since its inception in 2010 until his death in January 2022.

Dr. Mohamed is a renowned Kenyan lawyer who served as cabinet secretary in charge of sports, heritage and culture in the last Kenyan administration led by former president Uhuru Kenyatta.

Before joining Kenyatta’s cabinet she worked at the international organization for migration as the chairperson and at the world Trade Organisation’s general council as well as assistant secretary general of the united Nations and deputy executive director of the Nairobi based united Nations Environment program ( UNEP).

Speaking during the installation ceremony at IUEA auditorium the vice chancellor and senate chairperson Prof. Emeka Akaezuwa said the appointment marked a seminal moment and a milestone in the history of the institution and the entire IUEA community was eager to welcome Dr. Mohammed so as to get started on the new chapter of growth.

The chairperson of the board of trustees Alfonso Owiny Dollo doubling as the chief justice of Uganda welcomed the chancellor and emphasized that they have hope and believe in her experience which will help students get better deserved education that march the current technology.

He also urged the institution to maintain the charter with the required standards and ensure that IUEA occupies its rightful place in Uganda and allover East Africa.

The new chancellor Dr.Mohamed committed to ensure that the mission and vision of the university are full filled.

She also pledged to be open and ready for partnerships from various partners.

At the same occasion the university has also launched the scholarship fund aimed at helping the unprivileged to have better education.

The IUEA is a private university in Uganda with its main campus in Kampala and is among the private universities to have officially been gazetted as a fully chartered university by the National council for Higher Education on 18 January 2022 thus meeting its core mandate and gaining international recognition.
