Sgt. Abdul Ssebute, a renowned Uganda People’s Defence Forces UPDF boxing champion is under fire for openly declaring himself gay on his official Facebook page.
The East & Central African Bantamweight Championship, Sgt Ssebute is reportedly being threatened by his military superiors as the case with most of the other LGBTQ+ individuals in Ugandan which has sparked a debate about the rights of queer people in the military.

Ssebute’s story is part of a growing trend of LGBTQ+ individuals in Uganda facing Discrimination due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. The Ugandan army’s Response to Sgt. Ssebute is indicative of their intolerance for those who do not conform to their heteronormative standards and could be seen as a violation of basic human rights.
“Misrepresenting the Ugandan Army and the entire Country, him being an active officer in the Army, he has tarnished the entire military forces with a bad image” said some impeccable sources that preferred anonymity

Sgt Ssebute’s declaration comes at the time when Ugandan lawmakers approved the Anti-Homosexuality bill 2023 that entrenches the criminalization of same-sex conduct. It also creates new strong offenses that will curtail any activism on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues and eradicate LGBT people from any form of social engagement in Uganda.
The bill is now waiting the Uganda’s President General Yoweri Kaguta Museveni assenting to it.
