Human Rights Commission meet with Journalists body UJA over rights violations, collaboration

The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) chairperson Mariam Wangadya has condemned the acts of violation of human rights including those of journalist’s rights in the country.

Chairperson made the remarks after a closed door meeting with the journalists leadership in the country of the Uganda Journalist Association (UJA) on Friday morning.

Wangadya noted that media rights and freedoms are very key in the transformation of the Country thus they should not be abused. She however cautioned journalists against violation of their ethics and laws as they express themselves and execute their duties.

She also revealed that the purpose of the meeting was also to strengthen cooperation with journalists in the fight against human rights abuses.

“The meeting mostly centered on cooperation, how we can work together to promote human rights of all Ugandans including those of journalists, and as a commission we recognize the importance of journalists and we are ready to carry the partnership forward.” Said Wangadya

UJA’s team was led by the Vice President Doreen Mwesigye Ampumuza welcomed the Commission’s commitment to renew the Memorandum of Understanding with them.

In the same meeting, Emmanuel Kirunda the Secretary General presented a report to the commission on the abuses faced by the scribes during the period of the pandemic and lockdown.
