Uganda government has been urged to deploy sign language interpreters in all public institutions and service centers to ease the communication and service delivery for the deaf persons.
In an exclusive interview with this website (trustednewsug.com), the executive director of Advocacy Promoted Through Empowering the Deaf (APTED) Foundation Uganda in Jinja, Dan Batambula said that it is very important to give equity to everyone including the deaf persons.
Batambula said that government has been reluctant in easing communication for the deaf in government service centers and offices by not deploying sign language interpreters in the said offices to help with communication.
He also exhibited dismayed by the government failure in helping in building capacity for the sign language interpreters and also training more since they are few professionals in that field.
“The government and funders should come out and support organisations like APTED that have come out to train sign language interpreters, create awareness in communities about the deaf people” said Batambula
APTED Foundation is a leading Deaf Support and Empowerment Non-Profit Organization based in Jinja City Uganda. The Organization focuses on bettering the life of lives of the Deaf people in and beyond the borders of Uganda. By teaching the Deaf how to communicate effectively with the rest of the world, how to share their opinions and teaching them how to socialize thus bridging the gap between the Deaf and the hearing.
APTED are currently running programs that include Sign Language training, education extension to the Deaf children, Deaf evangelism, financial education and many more with their limited resources especially in terms of finances since they depend on individual donation thus calling upon potential partners to join the cause.
