Police in Kabalagala are actively investigating the tragic drowning of Ntanda Owen, an 18-year-old boat sailor, at Gaba landing site in Makindye Division, Kampala District. The incident occurred on July 9, 2024, at approximately 17:45 hours.

According to initial reports, Ntanda Owen and his colleagues had departed from the landing site earlier that evening and had proceeded to a beach house. After parking their boat, they engaged in swimming activities as part of their leisure time. Unfortunately, during this time, Ntanda encountered difficulties and drowned.
Gaba police were promptly notified of the incident and responded immediately. Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, SSP Patrick Onyango, stated that upon receiving the report, Gaba police alerted the Marine police unit who swiftly initiated a search and rescue operation. As of now, the body of Ntanda Owen has not yet been recovered.

SSP Patrick Onyango further elaborated that the search efforts are being hindered by adverse weather conditions, including heavy rains, which are posing challenges to both the police marines and the local community involved in the rescue mission.
“The marine police and community volunteers are working tirelessly despite the difficult weather conditions to locate the victim,” SSP Onyango assured.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with water-based activities, particularly during adverse weather conditions. Authorities continue to urge caution and adherence to safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ntanda Owen’s drowning remains ongoing, with authorities committed to providing updates as the search and rescue operation progresses.
