Businessman shot dead in robbery, Police Launch Manhunt for Suspects

By Robert Segawa

Police in Matugga have launched a manhunt for unidentified assailants who shot dead a businessman during a robbery and fled with Shs500,000.

The deceased has been identified as Ssempewo Michael, 54, a resident of Kigogwa Cell, Gombe Division in Wakiso District.

According to police, the incident occurred on the night of September 14, 2026, at about 10pm as Ssempewo and his wife were returning home after shopping.

Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said the assailants stopped the couple and demanded money.

“The couple handed over Shs500,000, but the assailants demanded more money. When Ssempewo resisted, one of the attackers shot him in the head while he was seated in the driver’s seat,” Owoyesigyire said.

Ssempewo died at the scene, after which the assailants fled.

Owoyesigyire said a police patrol from Matugga responded to the incident and visited the scene, where relevant exhibits were recovered and documented.

He added that police had recorded statements from witnesses and conveyed the deceased’s body to the City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

“Police and sister agencies have launched a manhunt to identify and apprehend the suspects. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” Owoyesigyire said.
