UPC Demands Inclusion of Local Council Elections in Revised Election Plans, Warns of Democratic Deficit

By Jumah Kakomo

The Opposition Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party has expressed concern over the missing of local council elections in the revised roadmap for the 2025-2026 general elections.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday at party headquarters Kampala, the party spokesperson Arach Oyat Sharon revealed that they are dismayed to note that the revised roadmap fails to include local council elections, which are crucial for grassroots representation and democracy.

According to Sharon, this undermines the principles of decentralization and citizen participation enshrined in the constitution. She argued that local council elections are essential for holding leaders accountable and ensuring that local needs are addressed. “By excluding these elections, the government is disenfranchising citizens and concentrating power in the hands of a few,” Sharon stated.

She called on the Electoral Commission to revise the roadmap and include local council elections. “We urge the Electoral Commission to rectify this oversight and ensure that the democratic process is inclusive,” Sharon said.

The party head of media and communications Faizo Muzeyi called upon party leaders and the general public to prepare for mobilization and offer themselves for leadership in various elective positions.

“The time for action is now!” Muzeyi exclaimed. “We urge our party leaders, members, and supporters to gear up for the upcoming elections and take up leadership positions at all levels from local councils to parliament and beyond.”

Fazio emphasized the need for UPC to field strong candidates in all elective positions to bring about meaningful change. “We must present a united front and offer alternative leadership that prioritizes the needs of the people, not just the privileged few.”

He encouraged party members to come forward and offer themselves for leadership positions, saying, “Do not wait to be called upon – step forward and take the lead! Our party needs dedicated, passionate, and visionary leaders like you to drive our agenda forward.”

Faizo also appealed to the general public to rally behind UPC’s vision for a better Uganda. “Join us in our quest for a more just, equitable, and prosperous society. Together, we can make a difference and create a brighter future for all Ugandans.”

The UPC head of media and communications concluded, “Let us mobilize, organize, and take action! The time for change is now, and UPC is ready to lead the way!”
