In a profound loss to the world of arts and culture, Mr. Jackson Ndawula, a distinguished theatre and creative guru, has passed away.
Ndawula, who is also the father of Metro FM 90.8 General Manager Herbbie Kay, known off-air as Herbert Kyewalyanga, leaves behind a legacy of unparalleled contributions to the theatre community.
In early August, Mr. Ndawula was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer at Kampala hospital, Kampala where he was since admitted until his death. .
Ndawula’s influence extended far beyond the stage. He was a revered figure in Uganda’s cultural landscape, serving as the president of Assitej Uganda, an organization dedicated to the advancement of theatre for young audiences, and as the former Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Centre for the International Theatre Institute. His leadership in these roles has left an indelible mark on the sector.
Among his many achievements, Ndawula is particularly remembered for his tireless advocacy in shaping Uganda’s Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act of 2006. His efforts were instrumental in protecting the rights of creators and ensuring that their work was fairly recognized and compensated.
Ndawula’s passing is a significant loss not only to his family but to the entire creative community he so passionately nurtured. Tributes are pouring in from across the globe, celebrating his vision, dedication, and the profound impact he had on the arts. As Uganda and the world reflect on his remarkable life, his contributions will continue to inspire future generations of artists and advocates.
