Police and UPDF Arrest Over 20 Suspected Gangsters

By Robert Segawa

In response to rising public outcry, police in Kinawataka, Mbuya, Katoogo, Kaggo Center, and Kalerwe Zone, in collaboration with the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) and local community vigilantes, have arrested more than 20 renowned gangsters.

The joint operation comes amid growing concerns about insecurity in these areas, particularly during the evening and early morning hours when residents have reported thefts of mobile phones, bags, and national IDs by gangs operating in groups.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango announced the operation’s success, highlighting its focus on notorious black spots recognized for harboring individuals involved in narcotics and other criminal activities. The crackdown resulted in the apprehension of 20 male adults suspected of engaging in various illicit activities.

During the operation, police seized a significant haul of illegal items, including marijuana, housebreaking tools, knives, pangas, and SIM cards, all discovered in the targeted areas. The arrested suspects have been charged and are currently detained at Jinja Road Police Station, pending prosecution.

Onyango praised the effectiveness of intelligence-led initiatives in disrupting criminal activity, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in enhancing public safety. Police have pledged to continue such operations, particularly during the festival season, to ensure the security and peace of residents in these neighborhoods.
