Traffic Directorate Urges Bus Drivers to Obtain Mandatory Driver’s Badge Amid Increased Holiday Checks

By Kabuye Ronald
The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has reminded all bus drivers that possession of a driver’s badge issued by the Chief Licensing Officer at the Ministry of Works and Transport is a legal requirement under Section 42 (1)(e) of the Traffic and Road Safety Act (CAP 347). The reminder comes as the directorate ramps up snap checks and operations along highways during the festive season to ensure road safety.

Michael Kananura, the spokesperson for the Traffic and Road Safety Directorate, emphasized that failure to comply with this requirement is a serious offence, punishable by imprisonment for up to seven years upon conviction, as per Section 42(2) of the Act.

He further directed all bus drivers to visit the Ministry of Works and Transport to collect their badges, which are issued free of charge.

“Starting December 4th, 2024, all bus drivers must possess a valid driver’s badge to proceed with passengers at any checkpoint,” Kananura stated. “Any driver found without a valid badge will face legal action and be taken to court.”

This move aims to strengthen road safety enforcement as Uganda enters the busy festive period.
