BESIGYE: JEEMA urges NRM supporters to restrain their party leadership’s extreme approaches

According to a local Luganda adage, “Ebbwa eddene ligambwako nyiniryo,” meaning a giant dog is best tamed by its owner.

In light of this wisdom, the Justice Forum requests that NRM supporters advise their party’s top military leadership to refrain from high-handed approaches that could plunge the country into chaos. Supporters can caution withdrawing loyalty and isolate the leadership if they refuse to listen.

The continued detention of Dr. Besigye and other political prisoners, despite a trial judge recognizing Besigye’s poor health, has left the nation perplexed. This decision reflects the mentality of Besigye’s tormentors, who ordered his detention but hesitate to provide better healthcare.

The Justice Forum calls upon NRM supporters nationwide to join the national outcry against the military leadership’s actions, which could lead to devastating consequences. Given that there’s no army mightier than a combined effort of citizens, this intervention will impact the current approaches and highlight the stakes.

Given the high tensions across the country, JEEMA also urges parliament to consider emergency amendments to the constitution and electoral laws. These amendments should provide for postponing the upcoming elections and introducing a peaceful three-year transition process from President Museveni to a new leader. This will facilitate for a more dignified retirement for HE President Museveni than waiting for a contrary inevitable exit.

The previous presidential election was marred by bloody violence, and the next one may be worse if the current gaps are not fixed. The proposed transition period should involve reconciliation and dialogue. We must proactively act now to avoid catastrophe.
