The upcoming Kawempe North by-election, set for March 13, 2025, has drawn the attention of 20 candidates who are preparing for nomination this Wednesday and Thursday, Rehema Nassuna, the Assistant Returning Officer for Kawempe Division, has urged all contestants to maintain discipline and avoid any form of violence or chaos during the nomination process and throughout the election period.

In an exclusive interview with www.trustednewsug.com, Nassuna shared that the nomination process will take place on Wednesday, February 26, and Thursday, February 27. Among the 20 candidates who are expected to be nominated 13 are vying for the MP seat while 7 are vying for directly elected councillors for Kazo Angola.
Those that are waiting for MP seat nomination on Wednesday include: Hanifa Karadi, Luwemba Lusswa Muhammed, Luyimbazi Elias Nalukoola, Kayondo Fahad, Mukiibi Sadat, Nsereko Moses, and Ntege Ndugga Moses. The candidates nominated on Thursday will include: Musiitwa Ismail, Ddamulira Hamza, Mutazindwa Muhamood, Mukasa Jacob Kasana, Kasacca Henry Mubiru and Faridah Nambi
The seven that are vying for the directly elected councillor for Kazo Angola include: Ssetuba Habibah, Birimumaiso David Muwanguzi, Ssebuuma Bills Robert, Sebunya Sharif, Yiga Musa Ngobya, Ssemata Lawrence Masuuti, and Ssebuggwawo Tadeo.

Nassuna strongly cautioned candidates against holding processions, a practice that can easily escalate into disorder. She also emphasized the importance of a peaceful, free, and fair election process.
“Candidates, stakeholders, and the general public must collaborate to ensure that electoral laws are followed, promoting a peaceful atmosphere throughout the campaign and the election,” she said.
The by-election for the Kawempe North Parliamentary seat was triggered by the unfortunate passing of incumbent Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya earlier this year, following a long period of illness. The position for the Kazo Angola councillor at Kawempe Division also became vacant after a tragic car accident claimed the life of the former holder of that seat.
Nassuna’s call for order and unity underscore the crucial role of peaceful elections in safeguarding democracy. As the nomination process approaches, the focus remains on ensuring a smooth transition to a new representative for Kawempe North and the Kazo Angola councillor position.
