As Uganda gears up for the 2026 general elections, several journalists have declared their intentions to contest for parliamentary seats, following in the footsteps of media professionals who transitioned into politics. Notable among them is Ivan Kimuli Kigozi, who is set to challenge the long-serving MP Keefa Kiwanuka for the Kiboga East seat. Kigozi joins a growing list of journalists seeking elective positions, including Zambali Bulasio Mukasa, Ivan Kyeyune, and Journalist Charles Mwanguhya eyes Burahya County MP seat

Journalists in the 2026 Race
Ivan Kimuli Kigozi (Kiboga East)
Kigozi, known for his dynamic reporting and media presence, is looking to unseat Keefa Kiwanuka, who has held the seat for several terms. Kiwanuka, however, remains a formidable opponent with strong grassroots support. Kigozi’s chances will largely depend on his ability to rally the youth and leverage his media popularity to win over undecided voters.
Zambali Bulasio Mukasa (Nansana Municipality)
A seasoned news anchor at NBS, Mukasa is eyeing the Nansana Municipality seat. Given Nansana’s urban electorate, his strong media appeal and connection with ordinary citizens could give him an edge. However, he will need to translate his on-screen popularity into structured political mobilization to stand a real chance.

Ivan Kyeyune (Nakasongola)
Kyeyune’s decision to contest in Nakasongola introduces another media personality into the political fray. This will be his second attempt , he will need to build a strong grassroots network to compete against established political figures.
Charles Mwanguhya( Burahya County MP)
Although details of Mwanguhya’s political ambitions are still emerging, his background in journalism could provide a platform to articulate policies effectively. His success will depend on the political landscape and competition in his chosen constituency.
Journalists Who Paved the Way
The move from journalism to politics is not new in Uganda. Several journalists have successfully transitioned into influential political roles:
Wafula Oguttu: Former Leader of Opposition and co-founder of The Monitor newspaper.
Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda: From The Observer to MP under the FDC ticket.
Joel Ssenyonyi: Former NTV journalist, now the Leader of Opposition in Parliament.
Agnes Nandutu: Former NTV journalist, now Woman MP for Bududa District.
With media professionals increasingly joining politics, the 2026 elections could see a new wave of journalist-turned-politicians reshaping Uganda’s political landscape. Their chances of winning will depend on their ability to translate their media influence into tangible political support.
