UPDF Soldiers Storm Police Station, Brutalize Officers and Civilians, Living Them Severely Injured

By Robert Segawa

The Officer in Charge of Lubowa Police Station, ASP Sunday Innocent, five of his subordinates, and eight civilians are currently nursing serious injuries at Doctor’s Clinic Lubowa and other nearby hospitals following a violent assault allegedly carried out by Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers attached to the Special Forces Command (SFC).

The incident occurred on the evening of April 30 at Lubowa Police Station, located under Kampala Metropolitan South in Wakiso District.

The injured police personnel have been identified as ASP Sunday Innocent, D/IP Kisa Claire, Sgt Kabaho, D/Sgt Njose, and D/C Tubwita—all attached to Lubowa Police Station.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, a case of aggravated robbery and attack on a police station has been registered under CRB 50/2025.

It is alleged that the incident began when Lt. Samson Amo, an officer attached to the UPDF (SFC), called ASP Sunday Innocent requesting him to detain eight individuals reportedly arrested during an operation in Lubowa. When ASP Innocent asked for details regarding the nature of the operation and the offenses committed by the suspects, Lt. Amo became agitated and verbally abusive.

“I invited Lt. Samson Amo, who was with RA 250778 Private Opio Emmanuel, into my office to clarify the matter before we could formally receive the suspects,” ASP Sunday Innocent recounted.

As discussions were ongoing, approximately twelve armed UPDF soldiers arrived in a vehicle with registration number H4DF 3348. They surrounded the police station, placed everyone at gunpoint, and violently assaulted the officers on duty. Civilians, including workers painting the station and visitors, were also beaten during the approximately 10-minute ordeal. The soldiers then fled as members of the local community began to gather.

Owoyesigyire confirmed that six of the eight individuals brought in by the UPDF were seriously injured and are currently admitted to Doctor’s Hospital. The motive behind their arrest remains unclear, as Lt. Amo reportedly failed to provide any justification.

In addition to the injuries sustained, three police officers had their mobile phones stolen, and an unconfirmed number of phones and other valuables belonging to civilians were also taken.

According to SP Namutosi Salama, the Division Police Commander of Kajjansi, investigations into both the arrests and the conduct of the UPDF soldiers have commenced. The injured officers have received medical attention, and six personnel have been deployed to reinforce the station in the meantime. PF3 medical forms have also been issued to the injured civilians.
