In a bid to gain voter support ahead of the 2025 NRM party primaries, candidates vying for the Iganga Municipality Member of Parliament seat have turned to door-to-door campaigns as a key strategy to reach the electorate directly.

Hajji Ojasi Swaibu, one of the most vibrant contenders in the race, emphasized the need for Iganga residents to distinguish between genuine leaders and mere political opportunists. While addressing market vendors in Northern Division, Ojasi who is also the Executive Director of the Ojasi Charity Foundation — urged communities in Nkono and Mutukula to rally behind his candidacy, promising development and tangible change.
“Through my projects, I’ve taken steps to fight unemployment among the youth and women, tackled health challenges, supported community associations, and promoted talent,” Ojasi told reporters.

When asked why he shifted his focus toward charity work, particularly in supporting women and youth, he responded:
“We all know the challenges women go through. Thinking about them first means saving the future. Through the Ojasi Charity Foundation, I am training women to become self-reliant to use less and gain more. Empowering women is key to solving many of the problems in homes and society because, at the end of the day, everyone needs money,” Ojasi explained.

He also revealed plans to establish a modern, free skilling center in Iganga that will be equipped with production machines for various vocational trades. The goal, he said, is to empower trained groups to generate income and receive certification including UNBS stamps to market their products.
“We are in a serious battle against poverty and unemployment,” he added. “My people will be supported no matter what. We have numerous programs designed specifically for the youth and women, especially those in the most vulnerable groups. We want to make our boys and girls skilled, productive, and self-reliant in this tough Ugandan economy.”

As the NRM primary race intensifies, two candidate’s businessman Ojasi Swaibu and retired UPDF officer Captain Buwaso have emerged as front-runners. Their rising popularity comes after Hon. Bawazir Toto, the party’s former flag bearer, stepped down from the race.
The NRM primaries are scheduled for July 16, 2025. The winners will go on to represent the party in the 2026 general elections.
