New SURU Chairperson Vows to Defend Rights Activists Ahead of Elections

Stand Up for Rights Uganda (SURU), a coalition comprising over 72 organizations dedicated to advocating for human rights and social justice, has expressed alarm regarding the increasing threats faced by activists as the nation approaches its national elections. This week, the coalition introduced its new chairperson, Mr. Christopher Situma, who succeeds the outgoing leader, Mr. Paul Ssebunya.

In his inaugural public address, Mr. Situma told the public about the commitment to enhancing unity among civil society organizations and safeguarding human rights defenders, who he noted are becoming more frequently targeted. Activists are experiencing unprecedented levels of harassment and intimidation, Mr. Situma stated. As the elections draw near, the space for free expression continues to diminish. It is our duty to unite and ensure that these voices are not silenced.

Since its establishment in 2017, SURU has acted as a platform for a variety of civil society actors, including student groups and humanitarian organizations. In recent years, the coalition has focused more on defending those who defend human rights, providing support to activists and organizations facing restrictions or reprisals for their efforts.

Several member organizations, particularly those involved in humanitarian rights, have reported disruptions to their campaigns and attempts to hinder their advocacy. Some leaders have claimed they are being surveilled and interfered with, while others have raised concerns about escalating threats amid rising political tensions.

Mr. Situma, the newly appointed chairperson of SURU, has pledged to foster unity among civil society organizations and protect human rights defenders from increasing intimidation and harassment. He also intends to continue documenting and exposing instances of oppression within society. He urged the public to collaborate with him on any human rights issues that arise in their communities, promising to respond in accordance with the law as outlined in the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda Our coalition exists to protect the work of those who courageously defend human dignity, he remarked. “This is a crucial time for activists in Uganda, and SURU will remain committed to highlighting violations and demanding accountability.”

The outgoing chairperson, Mr. Ssebunya, who has been in office since 2022, was recognized for broadening SURU’s partnerships and enhancing its visibility in the region. Members believe that the transition in leadership comes at a pivotal moment, with civic freedoms facing increased pressure.
