Police Reaffirms Commitment to Securing 2026 General Elections

By Robert Segawa

The Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, has reassured the public that the Uganda Police Force (UPF), in collaboration with sister security agencies and key stakeholders, is fully committed to ensuring a peaceful and secure environment ahead of the 2026 General Elections.

Speaking ahead of the Electoral Commission’s nomination of candidates for various elective positions, IGP Byakagaba described the nominations as a “crucial stage of the electoral process” that will soon usher in nationwide campaigns.

“The Uganda Police Force has undertaken deliberate measures to secure the general elections,” he said. “I encourage all political actors and citizens to exercise their rights responsibly and respect the rights of others.”

Byakagaba emphasized that all laws of Uganda remain in effect during the electoral period and warned against acts of malpractice, including:

  • Electoral offences
  • Traffic violations
  • Incitement to violence and hooliganism
  • Computer misuse
  • Destruction of property
  • Spreading false or misleading information

He urged citizens to be ambassadors of peace and to reject manipulation by groups seeking to incite violence. Instead, he encouraged Ugandans to focus their energy on building a better, united future.

The IGP noted that Uganda has made significant progress in maintaining peace and achieving socio-economic development, which must be protected as citizens exercise their democratic rights.

He also called on the media and information stakeholders to promote accurate and respectful reporting, and to avoid contributing to misinformation and disinformation.

“Once again, the Uganda Police Force reaffirms its responsibility to safeguard the electoral process through cooperation with all stakeholders,” he said. “Let us remain vigilant and guard against those who may seek to disrupt the peace.”

On behalf of the UPF, Byakagaba pledged to maintain open communication channels and continue working closely with the public to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections in 2026.
