Justice Aisha Batala Appointed New IGG as Museveni Replaces Beti Kamya

By Kabuye Ronald

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Hon. Justice Aisha Naluzze Batala as the new Inspector General of Government (IGG), replacing Hon. Beti Olive Namisango Kamya. The announcement was made via X by Faruk Kirunda, the Deputy Press Secretary to the President, on Monday.

“In exercise of his constitutional powers, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Hon. Justice Aisha Naluzze Batala as the new Inspector General of Government (IGG), replacing Hon. Beti Olive Namisango Kamya,” Kirunda confirmed.

Justice Batala’s appointment marks a significant shift in the leadership of Uganda’s anti-corruption watchdog. She brings with her a wealth of experience from the judiciary and is expected to spearhead the government’s ongoing efforts to fight corruption and promote accountability.

The President has, however, retained the two Deputy IGGs ,  Dr. Patricia Achan Okiria and Mrs. Anne Twinomugisha Muhairwe who will continue to serve in their respective capacities alongside the new IGG.

As per constitutional procedures, the names of the appointees have been submitted to Parliament for vetting and approval.

Justice Batala’s appointment comes at a time when the Office of the IGG is under pressure to step up investigations and enforcement amidst growing public concern over corruption in public offices.

If approved, she will be expected to build on the groundwork laid by her predecessor, Hon. Beti Kamya, who served in the role since 2021.

The vetting process in Parliament is expected to take place in the coming days.
