Police Confirm Arrest of NUP Mobilisation Chief Buwembo Habib, Two Others

By Kabuye Ronald

The Uganda Police Force has confirmed the arrest of the Head of Mobilisation for the National Unity Platform (NUP), Buwembo Habib, along with Katabala Ronald and Nakakembo Josephine.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachael Kawala said the three are currently being held in police custody and will be presented before court.
“The Uganda Police Force would like to confirm the arrest of Buwembo Habib, Katabala Ronald and Nakakembo Josephine. The three are currently in police custody and will be arraigned before court in due course,” SP Kawala said.

Earlier in the day, NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, alleged that Buwembo Habib had been abducted on Masaka Road. In a post shared on social media, Kyagulanyi claimed that Habib was taken alongside other party members, including Jamila Wa Bobi and Batabaale Ronald, whom he identified as a candidate.

“We’ve been informed of the abduction of our Head of Mobilisation, comrade Buwembo Habib this afternoon on Masaka Road,” Kyagulanyi wrote, adding that another party member, Zziwa Robert, had been taken a day earlier. He accused security agencies of holding opposition supporters incommunicado or charging them on what he described as “trumped up charges.”

The arrests come amid heightened political tensions, with opposition figures repeatedly accusing security agencies of targeting their members, claims the police have previously denied, insisting that all arrests are conducted within the law.
