Today Marks One Year Since Rajiv Ruparelia Died In a Road Crash

By Musisi Lwanga

On this day in 2025, Rajiv Ruparelia—Managing Director of the Ruparelia Group and son of prominent businessman Sudhir Ruparelia—lost his life in a fatal road accident along the Entebbe Expressway.

The crash occurred near the Busabala flyover traffic lights in Makindye-Ssabagabo, Wakiso District, when Rajiv reportedly lost control of his vehicle in the early hours of the morning. He had been traveling from Kajjansi toward Speke Resort Munyonyo to prepare for a wedding scheduled for the next day, where he was expected to serve as best man.

At approximately 1:45 a.m., his Nissan GT-R struck a pavement, overturned, and burst into flames, killing him instantly.

News of his passing spread quickly, prompting an outpouring of tributes across social media and beyond. Many remembered him as vibrant, driven, and deeply committed to both his work and personal life.

Veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda described Rajiv as someone who embraced life fully while remaining dedicated to the family business. He highlighted Rajiv’s determination, courage, and persistence, particularly in matters concerning family interests.

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among noted that the country had lost a promising and innovative young entrepreneur who contributed significantly to economic growth and job creation. Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa echoed similar sentiments, portraying Rajiv as passionate about Uganda and committed to uplifting others.

Victoria University Vice Chancellor Prof. Lawrence Muganga praised Rajiv’s influence in the education sector, calling him a forward-thinking leader whose ideas helped shape modern learning standards in Uganda. He emphasized that Rajiv’s impact would continue to benefit future generations.

On May 6, 2025, thousands gathered at the Lugogo Hindu Crematorium to pay their final respects. In the days leading up to the مراسم, mourners assembled at the family home in Kololo, many dressed in white in line with Hindu mourning traditions.

A solemn procession carried his body through major parts of Kampala, passing landmarks associated with the Ruparelia Group. The convoy drew large crowds, with many residents pausing to honor him as it moved slowly through the city.

At the cremation site, Hindu rites were performed in an emotional ceremony. Rajiv’s father lit the funeral pyre, marking a poignant farewell.

Speakers at the مراسم remembered him not only for his business achievements but also for his humility, generosity, and compassion. A message delivered on behalf of President Museveni acknowledged the Ruparelia family’s role in Uganda’s development and included a condolence contribution.

Born on January 2, 1990, Rajiv was the youngest of three siblings. He is survived by his wife Naiya and their young daughter. Educated in the United Kingdom, he earned a degree in Finance and Banking from Regent’s University London.

Rajiv first made his mark in Kampala’s social scene as a teenager by launching Club Sway, which quickly became a popular nightlife destination. He formally joined the family business in 2014 and rose to Managing Director in 2017, overseeing multiple enterprises, including Kampala Parents’ School.

Beyond business, he developed a passion for motorsport, joining rally competitions in 2019 and later becoming a patron of the Central Motorsport Club. He earned recognition in the sport, frequently driving a Volkswagen Polo Proto.

Following his passing, several initiatives have been launched to honor his memory. These include community projects such as the construction of a borehole in Naguru, medical outreach programs providing free healthcare services, and various memorial events celebrating his contributions.

Through these efforts, Rajiv Ruparelia’s influence continues to be felt, reflecting a legacy built on enterprise, community service, and a commitment to improving lives.
