EC Sets July Dates for Village LC I and Women Councils Elections

The Electoral Commission (EC) has unveiled the official programme for the conduct of the 2026 Local Council and Women Councils elections across Uganda.

Speaking to journalists at the Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala, EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi announced that elections for Village Local Council Committees (LC I) will be held on July 28, 2026, while elections for Village Women Committees are scheduled for July 23, 2026.

Justice Byabakama said voter registration will take place from July 6 to July 10, 2026, followed by the display of voters’ registers on July 13 and 14. Nomination of candidates will run from July 15 to July 19, 2026.

Campaigns for Village Women Committee candidates will be conducted from July 20 to July 22, while campaigns for LC I candidates will run from July 20 to July 27, 2026.

According to the EC Chairperson, voting at the village level will be conducted using the traditional method of lining up behind candidates in an open public space.

He explained that Local Council elections will conclude at the parish level, while Women Councils elections will continue through the administrative hierarchy from village to district level, culminating in a National Delegates Conference scheduled for September 3 and 4, 2026.

Justice Byabakama further noted that elections at the national level of the Women Councils structure will be conducted by secret ballot.

He called upon candidates, voters, election officials, and other stakeholders to comply with electoral laws, guidelines, and regulations to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process.
